The stars were out in full force at the glitzy Hollywood ceremony  that saw Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh become the first Asian woman to win the lead actress Oscar in the Academy Awards’ 95-year history. The Malaysian actress, who won for her shape-shifting role in “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” beat out tough competition from past Oscar winner Cate Blanchett and other nominees.

As the accolades rolled in for the groundbreaking film, Yeoh quickly acknowledged the significance of her win, stating in her speech, “This is proof that dreams do come true” and that it is for “every little girl that looks like me.” Indeed, Yeoh’s victory is a watershed moment for the Asian community. As the celebration continued at the viewing party for the live broadcast of the awards ceremony in Malaysia, Yeoh’s mother, Datin Janet Yeoh, was understandably emotional. “I’m thrilled but too overwhelmed to say much. She certainly deserved it, and I had no doubt she would win it,” she said.
